It leads a life of isolation, moving in pairs only to breed or rear its young. Usually nocturnal, they may also hunt in the daytime. They live in dens and burrows, even those of other animals like the armadillo. Their diet is mainly carnivorous; however, they do forage for eggs of ground nesting birds. The fox breeds in early spring, and delivers a litter of eight kits after a gestation of 55 to 60 days.
