Only males grow these tusks, although females also have lower tusks. The upper tusks of the male are for defence while the lower tusks are offensive weapons. The females deliver litter size of one or two piglets, after a gestation period of 157 days. They are accomplished swimmers, but have been known to be carriers of swine fever.
