What is Nutmeg?

Nutmeg is a popular fragrant spice. There are at least 80 types of nutmeg. The most common one grows on a striking evergreen tree which has a 7-metre high straight trunk. The tree bears fruit after 8 years of growth. The fruit is pear-shaped and golden yellow in colour. The fruit opens in halves. The red fleshy part is called mace and the nut-like seed lies there. The part of the nutmeg used as spice, is inside this seed. The nuts are separated from the mace and dried in ovens. Then the shells are removed. These fragrant nutmegs are exported across the world.
