When the world began, all the animals worked for man except the camel. He ate a lot and when anybody spoke to him, he said, “Humph.” One day, a horse, a dog and an ox said to the camel, “Come and work like the rest of us.” “Humph!” said the camel and went away. Now, man called the three animals and said, “Since the camel is not working, you must work double-time to make up for it.” The three angry animals complained to the jinn of all deserts. The jinn decided to teach the camel a lesson. “Humph!” said the camel as soon as he saw the jinn. But suddenly, he saw his back, that he was so proud of, puffing up into a great big lolloping humph. The jinn said, “That is your very own humph that you have brought upon your very own self by not working.” The poor camel could only stare in surprise.
