Mind-Bending Magic (Brilliant Biology Experiments)

You will need:

  1. 2 identical circular mirrors
  2. Fevicol/superglue
  3. 2 unsharpened pencils

Conduct this simple experiment to understand how the brain gets confused by what the eyes show us.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Ask an adult to help you superglue the 2 pieces
of circular mirror back to back, so that you may
see a reflection on both sides.
  2. Next, superglue 2 flat
    unsharpened pencils in
the exact centre of the mirror on both sides.
  3. Wait for the pencils and mirrors to dry so that it
may not break when you try your experiment.
  4. Gently lift the contraption with both hands, holding the pencils in each hand.
  5. Hold the pencils at an angle so that you may see the reflection of one hand (right hand) in the mirror.
  6. Focus on the image of your right hand in the mirror and twist your left hand gently so that the mirror may revolve and the image may move as well.
  7. Does this feel weird in any way?

RESULT

It will feel weird. This happens as a result of the brain constantly receiving information from our various senses. It interprets this information and relays messages which control the body. But when the left hand twists the pencil, the brain sees a reflection of the right hand which looks like the left hand, but it isn’t moving, thus confusing the brain.
