The Macrocephalon maleo (scientific name) or maleo is native to the tropical hill forests of Sulawesi, Indonesia. With a height of 39 inches, the maleo has black plumage on the upperparts, and a rosy salmon-coloured chest and underparts. It has a yellow bare facial skin, reddish iris and a reddish-orange beak. It has a black helmet-like crown and blue-grey webbed feet. Its diet is comprised of everything from fruits and seeds to beetles and small invertebrates. Its brooding habits are quite unique. The female lays 1 egg in the sand and buries it, which is then incubated by the sun as a heat source for 78 days, after which the hatchling digs its way out and hides in the forest. Its IUCN listing is ENDANGERED.
