Grebe

The Podicipedidae (scientific name) or grebe is a family of birds with a cosmopolitan distribution. Small-medium sized birds, their height varies from 9-28 inches depending on the genera. They have pointed bills, tiny tails and rounded bodies. Their plumage colouration varies from white and brown-grey (non-breeding males) to rusts and chestnut (breeding male). Their plumage is also dense and waterproof. Its feet are unique. They are large and placed far back on their body, making them amazing swimmers, but weak walkers. Their diet is comprised of fish to fresh water insects and crustaceans. A clutch of 2-10 eggs (depending on the genera) is laid on floating nests made of plant material, incubated for approximately a month. Its IUCN listing also varies depending on the genera.
