The coronation ceremony of Lord Ganesha had all the gods and the sages in attendance. Everybody took turn to bless Ganesha. Lord Vishnu and goddess Lakshmi were there, too. But as soon as they met Ganesha, Lakshmi made haste to leave. Vishnu was upset with Lakshmi’s odd behaviour. He said, “You have not blessed Ganesha yet, Lakshmi. Why are you leaving already?” Vishnu then told Ganesha, “Ganesha, Lakshmi’s hasty temperament dismays me. She is always restless. Please help me make her calm and steady. Please allow her to sit on your lap.” “Most blessed will I feel if Mother Lakshmi sits on my lap,” answered Ganesha. He encircled Lakshmi with his trunk and made her sit on his lap. The gods and the sages were thrilled to see this beautiful sight. They all cheered for Lakshmi and Ganesha, “Jai Lakshmi-Ganesha! Jai Lakshmi-Ganesha!”
