There exist many stories about why Ganesha got very angry with the Moon-god (Chandra). According to one legend, Indra once organised a sumptuous meal for all the gods and the goddesses at his abode in Indralok. All the invitees started for Indralok, mounted on their respective vahans. Meanwhile, Ganesha was finding it difficult to sit on his vahan. Mushik was unable to bear Ganesha’s weight and was stumbling. On toppling over again and again, Ganesha asked Mushik, “What is happening, Mushik?” Mushik silently tried to balance himself. Shiva and Parvati, Brahma and Vishnu–all were about to reach Indralok. Here, Mushik was still struggling to carry Ganesha. The Moon-god was looking down at Mushik’s futile efforts. He found this sight funny. He started laughing. “Ha! ha! ha! Karttikey looks magnificent on his peacock. And look at you, Ganesha!” the Moon-god started mocking at Ganesha. Ganesha took this as an insult and was very angry with the Moon-god.
