The Ardeotis nigriceps (scientific name) or great Indian bustard is found solely in arid and semi-arid areas, with sparse vegetation and tall grass. These birds are endemic to India and Pakistan. Nearly 3.3 feet in height, this bird is one of the heaviest amongst flying birds. It has a black cap-like crown on its head which is contrasted by a pale head and neck. Apart from the underparts, which are pale, overall the plumage is brownish-sandy in colour with a black patch in white spots. While they may be omnivores, they prefer eating beetles and other insects. Other food-items in their diet include berries, rodents, grass, seeds, etc. The clutch-size is comprised of a single egg incubated for 25 days. Its IUCN listing is CRITICALLY ENDANGERED.
