The most common snake in North America is the garter snake with 28 different species. They are active in the day and prey upon insects, frogs, fish and rodents. Winters are spent hibernating in dens as a large group of snakes. They release pungent-smelling musk when threatened and are popular as pets as they are harmless to humans.
