Finch

The Fringillidae (scientific name) or finch is mostly found in the wooded forests of the Northern Hemisphere. Some species are common to the Hawaiian Islands and the Arctic. With breeds varying in sizes from 3.8 inches (Andean Siskin) to 10 inches (Pine Grosbeak), the Finch generally has brownish, greenish colour with a lot of black, and white in the wing bars. Bright yellow or red pigments are also common in the Finch. Most of them have strong stubby beaks. The females are duller than the males. Their primary diet is comprised of grains, supplemented with berries, arthropods and sometimes nectar. An average clutch has 2-4 eggs incubated for about 14 days. Its IUCN listing is CRITICALLY ENDANGERED or NEAR THREATENED depending on the species.
