Allium schoenoprasum is a bulbous perennial, forming a clump of erect, narrowly cylindrical, onion-scented leaves, with rounded umbels of light purple bell-shaped flowers. They grow from 6 to 10 inches high. The flowers bloom in June and July. The Asian variety of chive is called Chinese chives, garlic chives or kuchai. Nutritionally, it is rich in vitamin C, potassium and folic acid. It is known to promote good digestion, ease stomach upset and prevent bad breath. It has a diuretic effect that will lower high blood pressure.
