It is an annual herbaceous shrub. The plant is about 3.5 metres tall and has a deep penetrating tap root. The dark green, toothed leaves are arranged alternately on the branches. Flowers are borne singly in the leaf axils. The flowers are red to dark red. The bloom time is in summer and autumn. This plant attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. The flower extract has been traditionally used for liver disorders and high blood pressure. Hibiscus tea is rich in Vitamin C. The fruit is used externally in cases of sprains, wounds and ulcers.
