The basenji is characterized by forward pointing ears. It belongs to the hound group and a pariah type as well, which explains why it is preferred as a hunting dog. It breeds once a year, a litter may have four to six puppies. The dogs suffer from a disorder called the Fanconi syndrome which afflicts the kidneys.
