Angad in Ravana’s Court

Rama decided to send one more messenger to Lanka before the war. All of them chose Hanuman again. But Rama said, “This time, Angad will go as the messenger to Ravana lest they should think that there is only one brave warrior in the monkey-army.” Angad reached the court and tried to persuade Ravana, but he did not listen. In fact, taunting him, Ravana said, “Aren’t you ashamed of living with those frivolous ascetics who killed your father? My brave soldiers will kill and eat everyone in a trice.”

“O Ravana! I, a mere monkey of Rama, vow that I will go away leaving Mother Seeta here if anybody succeeds in moving my foot a bit,” said Angad while resting his right foot firmly on the ground. At the command of Ravana, all the warriors tried to lift his foot, but could not even move it a little bit. The angry Ravana then rose from his throne and bent down to lift Angad’s foot. Immediately, Angad lifted his leg from there and said, “Why are you holding my foot, Ravana; hold the feet of Rama. He alone will forgive you.” Saying so, he walked out of the court.
