The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace of Yamoussoukro in the Ivory Coast is the largest church in the world. The complex is over 30,000 square metres and the dome rises over 500 feet into the air. It can accommodate 18,000 worshippers. The Basilica was constructed between 1985 and 1989. It is modelled after St Peter’s Basilica in Rome. In earlier times, a Roman Basilica was a large hall built for meetings, business and law.
