Gum is something which we can chew on. It is mostly of plant origin. Gums are used in foods, in pharmaceuticals and in cosmetics. It has adhesive properties. Gums are extracted by making an incision in tree bark and collecting the liquid throughout the season. ‘Gum Arabic’ comes out as a thick sticky liquid from varieties of acacia trees. It hardens when it comes in contact with air and water. It is used for manufacturing medicines, candies, silks, etc. Some gums absorb water and give rise to gluey mass. One such gum is ‘Gum Dragon’. It is used for making various cough syrups.
