What is Botany?

The term botany comes from the ancient Greek word ‘botane’ meaning herb. Botany is the scientific study of plants. It is also called ‘Plant Science’ or ‘Plant Biology’. Botany includes the study of plant structures, their classification, properties, diseases, etc. Plants refer to a wide range of living organisms, i.e. from the smallest bacteria to the largest living things, the giant trees. A Greek philosopher named Theophrastus was the first person to study about plants in 300 BC. Scientists who study botany are called botanists.
