What are Snails?

Snails are soft-bodied animals that have cap-like or spiralled shells. The shell is part of the body and is attached to the snail by muscles. The shell is made of a kind of limestone and is built by the snail itself. As the snail grows bigger, its shell also increases in size as well as strength. There are more than 65,000 species of snails. Out of which about 30,000 are marine snails, 5,000 live in freshwater and 30,000 live on land. The African Achatina achatina snail is the largest land snail and Pomacea snail from South America is the largest freshwater snail.
