Warty-Newt

Common name : Northern crested newt, Great crested newt

Scientific name : Triturus cristatus

Family : Salamandridae

Native to : Europe and Asia

Interesting fact : Warty newt’s skin produces an acrid smelling secretion to warn predators.

Conservation status : Least Concern

The warty newt is aptly named due to its warty, dark skin that has black spots. Their bellies are, however, orange with dark spots. They live under leaf litter in wooded areas. They come out in the night in search of worms, insects and tadpoles. Males develop zig-zag crests on their backs while breeding. They live for 25 long years.
