Vishwamitra’s Anger

Vishwamitra explained to a confused Ram why he was angry with Yayati–Some days ago, Yayati’s subjects complained to the king that a herd of wild elephants was terrorising them, trampling the crops and destroying their houses. As a king, it was Yayati’s responsibility to protect his people. So, he decided to hunt down the elephants. Yayati and his army went to the forest where they came across the herd of elephants. The king and the others got so engrossed in driving the elephants away that they did not notice Vishwamitra coming their way! Vishwamitra felt that Yayati had ignored him deliberately. “He failed to pay his respects to me. This is an insult, Ram. That is why you have to kill Yayati to avenge my insult,” Vishwamitra declared. Ram was puzzled! But Vishwamitra’s words had to be obeyed. So he sent a messenger to Kasi to inform Yayati about the war.
