Toco Toucan

The Ramphastos toco (scientific name) or toco toucan is found in open areas throughout Central and eastern South America.6-9 inches in length, this bird is extremely popular in zoos. The overall plumage including the head, upper and under parts is all black, excepting a white bib-like shape below the beak till the throat and white feathers above the tail. The beak is yellow-orange coloured and so is the area surrounding the eye. The eye also has a blue ring around it. Its main diet is comprised of fruits, but it also eats insects, frogs, small reptiles, small birds and their eggs. An average clutch has 2-4 eggs which are incubated by both parents for 17-18 days. Its IUCN listing is the LEAST CONCERN.
