The Thief and the Merchant

A thief repented before the Almighty for his deeds, and opened a trading shop. One night when he had locked his store and went home, an artful thief who had disguised himself as a merchant pulled out keys from his pocket.

He deceived the watchman and opened the shop and lit another candle he had with him. He then threatened the watchman to fetch him a camel, and he did. The thief loaded four bales of stuffs onto the camel, and gave two dirhams to the watchman and went away.

The next morning when the merchant found everything haywire inside his shop, he asked the watchman who then told him what had happened the last night. After enquiring the camel-driver and the seaman thereafter, where had he carried the man with the stuff, he was informed of the Khan where the thief had left his bales and cloak.

The merchant took the custody of both at Khan’s place. On his return, the thief confronted him and asked him to give back his cloak at least. The merchant laughed and gave him back his cloak. Both went their ways.
