The Skunk Ape is allegedly a large, bipedal mammal that is said to inhabit the US states of Florida, North Carolina, and Arkansas. The reports of the Skunk Ape were particularly common in the 1960s and the 1970s. In 1974, the sightings of a large, foul-smelling, hairy, ape-like creature, which ran upright on two legs were reported in Florida. The Skunk Ape is a cryptid–an animal whose existence has been suggested but has not been documented by the scientific community, a category that appears only in myths or is reported. The United States National Park Service considers the Skunk Ape to be a hoax.
