The King of Black Isles

Once upon a time, a Sultan came to a beautiful lake that looked like polished black marble among hills. On its bank was a magnificent palace but when he entered it there was no one to be seen.
He heard someone moaning about his fate and wishing to die. So, he followed the voice till he came upon a handsome young man seated on a throne.
The man could not get up because from the waist down he was made of black marble. The amazed Sultan asked him how he had ended up in such a state, and the young King told his story.
He was the King of the Black Isles who had married a beautiful lady and lived with her happily till he discovered that she was actually an enchantress. She did not love him at all.
He had punished her favourite slave severely for a serious crime and the fellow had nearly died. This made her so angry that she had turned the King into half man and half marble. She turned the city into a lake on which she built a palace for her slave whom she kept alive with her spells.

She changed the people of the city into fish and the islands into hills. Every day, she whipped the King who couldn’t move and then spent hours at the slave’s bedside trying to revive him. The Sultan decided to help the King of Black Isles. He killed the slave and lay down in his place, covering himself. When the enchantress came to him, she was delighted that he could speak.
He asked her to free the King first. She turned him back into a man. Then the Sultan, still with his face hidden, asked her to restore the kingdom to its old glory. As soon as she had done that, the Sultan killed her. He took the King to his own kingdom and declared him his heir.
