Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was a compassionate man. He had a servant whom he treated like the member of his family. One day, when Vidyasagar was descending the stairs of his house, he saw his servant sleeping on the staircase with a letter in his hand and tears on his face. Vidyasagar took the letter and read it. There was some bad news in it. He went and got a hand fan and started fanning his servant, so he could sleep comfortably. At that very moment, a friend of his came by. He exclaimed, “How can you be engaged in the service of a servant whose salary is hardly seven-eight rupees?” Vidyasagar replied, “My father also used to earn seven-eight rupees. I remember, one day, when my father was returning home, he fell unconscious on the road. A passerby helped him. In my servant, I can see the image of my late father.”
