The Golden Sword

A king had a golden sword. It had never seen a war. One day, a dispute broke out between the king and the king of his neighbouring kingdom. It ended with both declaring war.

The golden sword was excited as it would be taking part in a real battle. It would show everyone how special it was and would become famous throughout the kingdom.

By the time they reached, the first battle had already taken place, and the sword got to see the battlefield. It saw broken weapons, blood and dirt everywhere, dead and injured soldiers lying, cries of pain and a gloomy atmosphere. It was a pathetic scene.

The golden sword preferred to live in peace and spend its time taking part in competitions rather than going for a battle. So, on the night before what was going to be the final battle, the sword planned a way to prevent it from happening.

The sword started to vibrate. First, it gave out a low buzz, but this gradually got louder, until it became an annoying metallic noise. The weapons and the armours of the other soldiers asked the golden sword what it was  going to do.

It told them, “I don’t want the battle to take place tomorrow. I don’t like killing people.” The other weapons agreed and said, “We don’t like it either, but what to do?”

“Vibrate, just like me! We must make so much noise that no one is able to sleep,” the golden sword suggested.

So, the weapons and the armours started vibrating. It became so loud that it reached the enemy camp. And the weapons there which were equally sick of the war, also joined the protest. The soldiers could not sleep at all in all this noise.

The next morning, when the battle should have begun, not a single soldier was ready to fight. Everybody was tired and sleepy. The battle was put off for the next day. However, the weapons repeated the same thing in the night. The battle had to be postponed yet again. This carried on for the next five days.

Finally, the kings of the two kingdoms met to discuss the problem. They found the entire situation to be very amusing. It wasn’t long before both were laughing like friends. They forgot their old dispute and put an end to the war, each returning to his own kingdom. They now realised that the things that united them were more than those that set them apart.
