The Ensifera ensifera (scientific name) or sword-billed hummingbird is found in areas which are 2500 metre above the sea level, in South America, specifically Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela. While its average body-length is 5.5 inches, its bill is generally longer than its body. The head and wings are black-grey, while the upperparts are iridescent metallic dark-green. The feather pattern resembles scales. Since it has a very long thin pointed beak, this bird grooms itself with its feet. Its primary source of food is nectar, but it also eats small spiders and insects. The average clutch-size has 2 eggs which are incubated by the female alone. Its IUCN listing is the LEAST CONCERN.
