It is usually about 40 cm (1 foot 4 inches) long, with a tail 17 mm long. It is black with brown stripes, with a red tail and rump, and the underside is white. It has soft and dense fur, overlaid by longer, harsher hair. It is active during nights and rests in burrows made by other animals in the day.
