Sir Francis Drake was born in 1540-1544 in Tavistock, England, and he died on 27th January 1596 in Portobelo, Panama. An explorer and a privateer Francis Drake was the first Englishman and second European to sail around the world. On his first voyage to Africa he captured people and sold them as slaves. He became very rich by looting the Spanish ships. He was made the Vice-Admiral of the Navy. At the age of 23, he made his first voyage to the Americas, sailing with his second cousin, Sir John Hawkins, on one of a fleet of ships owned by his relatives.
Do you know: The Spanish called him ‘The Dragon’ and they put a prize for his capture at 20,000 ducats which is equivalent to seven million dollars today.
