With Ravana’s death the war ended. Vibheeshana performed his last rites and then Rama carried out his coronation as the king of Lanka. Hanuman with the permission of Vibheeshana went to fetch Seeta from the Ashoka Vatika in a palanquin. Trijata and the other she-monsters dressed Seeta beautifully and apologised to her for their sins. Seeta was compassionate. She pardoned all of them and was eager to be united with Rama.
Rama ordered that Seeta should come on foot so that the monkey warriors who fought on his side might see her. Hearing the words of Rama the monkey warriors were elated. Seeta came near Rama who told that she would have to take fiery ordeal to prove her innocence.
Seeta honoured his words and asked Lakshmana to kindle a fire. She bowed to Rama saying, “If even in thought, word or deed I have been unfaithful to my lord, may I be burnt to ashes!”

Then she entered the flames. The Fire-god emerged from the flames. “Lord Vishnu, you took the form of Rama to destroy Ravana. Seeta is your eternal consort, Lakshmi,” he said, handing over Seeta, unharmed by the fiery ordeal, to Rama.
