Seeking the Pearl

Princess Arabella had heard of a pearl guarded by an eagle. It was said to light up the whole island with its glow. She longed for that pearl.
Princess Arabella said she would marry the one who brought her that rare pearl. Many princess tried and went away disappointed.
One day, an ordinary young man, Peter, came to the palace saying he would like to win the princess’ hand in marriage. Arabella laughed at the country bumpkin but asked him if he could get the pearl.
Peter set off to find the island. On the way, he found an old man who was hungry. Peter had a loaf of bread. He gave half of it to the old man.
As Peter went along, he saw a pigeon which had fallen into a pond. He held out his staff for the pigeon to climb out. The pigeon thanked him and sat on his shoulder as he went on.
At a river bank, a fish lay in a pail as the fisherman threw his net for more. Peter heard the fish crying and, feeling sorry for it, he threw it back into the water.
When Peter came to the sea-shore, a large fish came up to him and said, “Come my friend! I’ll take you to the Island of the Pearl.”

Peter recognised the voice of the fish. He sat on its back and it swam to the island, waiting for Peter to return.
The island glowed with the lustre of the pearl and he went to the clearing where it lay in a beautiful silver bowl. Near it sat the large eagle guarding it. The pigeon spoke to Peter, “Take the loaf in your pocket. I’ll draw the eagle away. Replace the pearl with the bread and run to the fish. I’ll join you.”

Peter did as he was told; but when he drew out the loaf, it had turned into a large pearl! The pigeon lured the eagle away from the bowl and he ran to pick the pearl up. Peter swiftly replaced it and raced back to the fish. They set sail and soon the pigeon fluttered down onto his shoulder.
Princess Arabella was thrilled to get the pearl. So, she kept her promise and married Peter. The pigeon stayed in the garden and a pool was built for the fish. They stayed happily with them.
