Season

Season is a period when the weather condition remains constant with only slight variations. For example, in summer season, the weather remains hot with small variation in day-to-day temperature. In general, there are four seasons: summer, winter, rainy and autumn. Why do we have different seasons? The main reason behind this is:

Revolution of Earth around the Sun in an elliptical orbit.

And the tilt of Earth on its axis.

Due to the revolution and the tilt of the Earth, the sun rays fall variably on different regions of the Earth. The difference in the way the sun rays fall on the Earth’s surface leads to occurrence of different seasons.

Summer and Winter: Summer is the season when we experience plenty of daylight, long days and short nights. In the Northern hemisphere June 22 is the longest day of summer whereas in the Southern hemisphere it is the shortest day of winter. When the Northern hemisphere is tilted towards the Sun and is closest to it, there is summer in the Northern hemisphere (June 22-September 23) and winter in the Southern hemisphere. However, when direct sun-rays fall on the Southern hemisphere (December 22-March 21), it experiences summer and the Northern hemisphere experiences winter.

Spring and Autumn: Spring and autumn seasons are the seasons when neither of the two hemispheres are tilted more towards the Sun. The temperature is moderate. The Northern hemisphere experiences spring between March 21-June 21 (the duration between winter and summer) and the Southern hemisphere experiences it between September 23-December 21 (the duration between summer and winter). Similarly, during the spring season trees are in blossom whereas during autumn leaves fall off trees. Spring is the season of festivals when most of the sowing of crops takes place. The birds migrate towards cooler areas before start of summers and hibernating animals come out of hibernation in the spring season. The autumn season is associated with the period of harvest. Animals gather food for the upcoming winter season.

Hibernation: It is also known as winter sleep when animals living in extreme cold regions bury themselves in warm shelters.
