Ripen a Fruit (Biology Experiments)

The fruits we buy in market are not quite ripe. What do we do with them?
Things Required:
2 unripe peaches, nectarines or other
A brown paper bag
Your refrigerator fruit

Directions:
Place one of the unripe fruits in the crisper of the refrigerator for a day or two. Place the other in the paper bag and close it securely. Put it somewhere out of the way-on top of the refrigerator, for instance. Let it stand for a day or two. Taste both.
This Is What Happens:
The fruit in the refrigerator softens but it is not very tasty.
The fruit in the paper bag softens and sweetens!
Science Behind It:
In the paper bag, you are trapping and concentrating the ethylene gas that comes from the fruit naturally. This gas speeds up the ripening process. In the refrigerator, the ethylene gas is shared with the other contents of the crisper.
