Red-crested Cotinga

The Ampelion rubrocristatus (scientific name) or red-crested cotinga is found in tropical moist forests, edges of the cloud-forests and heavily degraded forests of South America, specifically Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela. 8.2 inches in length, this bird has grey plumage overall. The base of its beak is usually white and it also has a tuft of red feathers on the head, which are laid back along the neck but can be conspicuously displayed. A white tail band is visible when it is in flight. Omnivorous in nature, this bird eats mainly fruits and insects. With regards to its clutch-size or incubation period, not much is known about its breeding pattern. Its IUCN listing is the LEAST CONCERN.
