The rectus abdominus muscle is located on the front part of the body in the abdominal region. These muscles support the forward bending of the back, and they pull the ribs and the pelvis inwards and curve the back. These muscles are also used during bowel movements and coughing. Strengthening of the rectus abdominus muscles improves performance in sports that require jumping. When the fat layers from these muscles are removed, a classical ‘six-pack’ appearance can be viewed on these muscles.
