The Pithecophaga jefferyi (scientific name) or Philippine eagle is found only in the Philippines. From 2.8-3.3 feet in height, it is considered one of the largest eagles in the world. The back is dark brown, while the underside is creamy-white. Its face, nape and crown have brown feathers. It also has a shaggy-looking crest, giving it the appearance of the mythical Griffin. Its eyes and beak are bluish-grey and its powerful legs are yellow. Initially known as the monkey-eater, this bird’s diet extends to other animals, such as monitor lizards, large snakes, etc. Before a single egg is laid, the female goes into ‘egg lethargy’ 8-10 days in advance. Incubation lasts for 62 days. The national bird of the Philippines, its IUCN listing is CRITICALLY ENDANGERED.
