Mudpuppies are actually aquatic salamanders that are 11 to 16 cm long. You can tell them from their dark brown colour, bushy red external gills, flat heads and wide tails. They hide under rocks of freshwater bodies and under logs, rocks and shrubs. They love crayfish, worms and snails, and live for 11 years.
