Marco Polo

Marco-Polo

Marco Polo was born in 1254 in Venice, Italy, and he died on 8th January 1324 (aged 69-70 years) in Venice. Marco Polo was a Venetian merchant who undertook an epic journey to Asia, including India, China and Japan, and returned 24 years later. He recorded his travels in the book ‘The book of Marvels’ which he dictated to his fellow prisoner, Rustichello, when he was imprisoned during the Venetian war with Genoa. He was the first explorer to leave a detailed chronicle of his travels. There is dispute as to whether the Marco Polo family is of Venetian origin, as Venetian historical sources considered them to be of Dalmatian origin.

Do you know: Marco Polo’s book inspired Christopher Columbus and many other explorers to visit those eastern lands.
