Lucy and the Cow

Lucy had come to her cousins’ farm for the holidays. She saw them helping with the work, collecting eggs, cleaning the hen-house and stable, grooming the horses and even milking the cows. She enjoyed learning everything. But there was one thing that scared her: the big speckled Jersey cow, Betsy! “Betsy is very gentle and lovable,” said Matt and Belinda, her cousins, trying to help Lucy. But if Betsy even mooed, Lucy would run away! One day, Lucy stood at the shed and watched Belinda milking the cows. She became so interested that, quite forgetting Betsy, she went in slowly. “Let me try,” Lucy said. And Belinda taught her how to milk the gentle creature. Without realising it, Lucy sat down near Betsy with the pail. And soon she had forgotten her fear of Betsy. Now she asked her parents to let her go to the farm for every holiday!
