Princess Katie scattered seeds and grains for the birds and the squirrels. They had become so used to her and loved her so much that they would come and peck the grains from her hands and sit on her shoulders. But one morning, Katie did not come out. The birds and the squirrels were very worried. They flew to the windows of the palace and finally came to her room. Princess Katie was ill! The squirrels also scurried up to the window-sill and peeped in. They whispered to one another and decided they must do something to make her feel well. They ran to the kitchen and picked up the little bits of cake, cheese and pie. They rushed back and put all the things on the table near her bed. When Katie recovered, she was amazed to see the little morsels on the table and a row of birds and squirrels on the window-sill! She got well soon!
