It is believed that Sheikh Chilli was born in a poor Sheikh family in some village. His father died when Sheikh was very small. Sheikh’s mother waited for the day when Sheikh would grow up to be a responsible young man and start earning money; it would be the end of their hard times. Everybody called him ‘Sheikh’ at school. They were taught the difference between masculine and feminine gender in their language. For a boy, one had to say, ‘khata hai’ and for a girl one had to say ‘khati hai’. One day, a girl fell into a well. Sheikh ran to his friends and told them that the girl was ‘chilli rahi’ instead of saying ‘chilla rahi’. Nobody understood what he was trying to say. He pulled them towards the well and the girl was saved. When the friends realised what he meant by ‘chilli rahi’, they all had a hearty laugh and started calling him ‘Chilli’. Since then, he became ‘Sheikh Chilli’.
