Honduran Emerald

The Amazilla luciae (scientific name) or Honduran emerald is endemic to the tropical dry forests and shrub lands of Honduras. 3.7 inches in length, this little hummingbird has a glittering blue-green throat and upper chest. The upperparts are bright green and have bronze tinge. The lower belly is grey with green spots. The tail is greenish-bronze. The beak is thin, long and black with red at the base. Its diet is comprised mainly of nectar, from various flowers and plants, but at times it is known to eat insects. An average clutch has 2 eggs laid in a deep cup-shaped nest, and is incubated by the female alone. Incubation period is not known. Its IUCN listing is ENDANGERED.
