Hanuman Adorns Arjun’s Flag

There are many legends behind how Hanuman’s image came to adorn the flag of Arjun’s chariot. According to one legend, a Brahmin once approached Arjun and Krishna and sought their help to quench his hunger. When Krishna and Arjun assured their help, the Brahmin revealed his identity. He was none other than Agni! Agni told them that he wanted to consume the Khandav forest. But Indra, the King of gods, was not letting him to do so. “I tried to burn the forest seven times. But every time, Indra’s friend Takshak doused the flames,” he said. To equip them, Agni gave the Sudarsan chakra to Krishna, and Varun Dev’s Gandiv bow, a chariot of white horses and a flag bearing an image of Hanuman to Arjun. Arjun created an umbrella of arrows in the sky so that not even a single drop of rain might reach the forest. Agni then burnt the forest and satisfied his hunger.
