Hairy-crested Antbird

The Rhegmatorhina melanosticta (scientific name) or hairy-crested antbird is found in tropical moist lowland forests of South America, specifically Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. 5.9 inches in length, this bird is quite dramatic-looking. Overall plumage is brown in colour, with a bushy grey crest, black face and the orbital skin which is pale blue in contrast to its reddish-brown eyes. The female is lighter brown and has black spotted upperparts. Its diet is comprised of insects and other arthropods. It usually catches its prey, when an army of ants swarm its prey, hence the name. An average clutch-size of the hairy-crested antbird has 2 eggs. The incubation period is not recorded. Its IUCN listing is the LEAST CONCERN.
