Erik Thorvaldsson, known as Erik the Red, was born in 950 in Norway and he died in 1000 (aged 50 years) in Norway. Erik the Red was a settler and explorer and a viking known to have founded the first continuous settlement in Greenland, Erik was exiled from Iceland twice and moved to Greenland. He arrived there and explored the landmass giving names to various places. By 985, his sentence had expired and he returned to Iceland and had convinced several hundred people to settle in Greenland. His colonies survived a deadly epidemic but died out around the time of Columbus.
