Common name : Arabian camel, Indian camel
Scientific name : Camelus dromedarius
Family : Camelidae
Native to : Sahara Desert in North Africa and along the Arabian Peninsula in the Middle East, South-East Asia in the Indian desert, Australian Outback.
Interesting fact : The hump stores fats, not water as commonly believed
Conservation status : Critically Endangered
Unlike its Bactrian cousin, it has only one hump on its back. Dromedaries forage for desert foliage–shrubs and cacti. They are social animals and live in groups; a herd is typically twenty members strong. The camels are able to monitor and control their body temperatures; they perspire less and have hardy kidneys. Gestation is 15 months, and a single calf is delivered.
