The skins are covered in warts that end in black-coloured spines giving them their name. They can be found hiding under stones near river banks, forest edges and also suburbs. They feed on insects, earthworms, spiders and scorpions, and breed in slow-flowing rivers, pools and ponds. They are quite large growing to 20 cm and live for 4 years.
