In this easy experiment, we will try to examine the camouflaging technique of animals.
Things Required:
Red, transparent, plastic folder
Pale yellow crayon
White typing paper
Directions:
Draw a bird on the white paper with the yellow crayon. Cover the drawing with the red folder.
This Is What Happens:
The yellow bird disappears.
Science Behind It:
Both the yellow bird and red folder are reflecting light to your eyes. The red is not a pure colour, but has some yellow in it. This yellow blends in with the yellow from the bird drawing, and your eye is not sensitive enough to separate them. Animals that have similar colourations as their environment are often camouflaged, hidden, from prey. The stalking animal’s eyes cannot distinguish the colours enough to separate its meal from the leaves.
